Public Agenda is looking for a Communications Consultant to help us shape a Communications plan for our Healthier Democracies project. The goal of Healthier Democracies is to find examples of participatory democracy practices embedded in local and state government systems in places outside the US, and bring them back to American public officials as examples of what can, and should be done to make our democracy healthier. The audience for this project is American public officials and other people who are interested in how public institutions and the public in general can work more effectively together. Our primary products from the Healthier Democracies project include case studies, a toolkit for public officials, and a lessons learned document. The Communications Consultant will help us to think through the most compelling ways to disseminate the findings from our products.

The Consultant will examine our research to develop a robust communications plan that details strategies and best practices for disseminating our case studies and other products to a public-facing audience (including, but not limited to, web design and copy, informational reports, data visualizations, research snapshots, etc.). We would like the Consultant to create a menu of communications options, sharing the pros and cons of each, potential cost ranges, and (if the consultant cannot do some of the work themselves) a list of recommended companies to outsource work to such as web design. Although this first contract is limited to a Communications plan, there is the possibility for an additional contract for the Consultant to execute the plan over the course of the next 6 months.

Timeline: We would like the consultant to begin work on this immediately, finishing the Communications plan by the end of September. We expect this could be a slideshow presentation or a prepared document. Hours for completion can be negotiated, but we generally expect that the work would take around 10 hours.

To Apply: Please submit an email stating your qualifications and interest in the project along with a resume/CV and 2-3 work samples to Mikayla Townsend at We will be closing the search for this position by September 20 but may hire sooner if we find the right candidate.
