How You’ll Contribute

The Communications Division leads the development and execution of integrated communications and marketing strategies to further the mission of the National Geographic Society and advance its position as one of the world's most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. Driven by the Society's vision to be more globally known for its impactful Explorer-led mission programs, the Division's creative and strategic minds develop strategic communications, marketing campaigns, creative, content, and media to promote the Society's strategic plan and key priorities. The Division comprises six departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand, Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial.

The Director, Content Strategy is responsible for developing and executing annual and ongoing content strategies to amplify the work of the Society and our Explorer-led programs through our own channels and our joint venture with Disney, National Geographic Partners. Recognizing the power of content to build our community, educate the public, and motivate our core constituents, develop compelling content ideas around Explorers, programs and projects. The successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of the work of Society and the opportunities available through our joint venture, focusing primarily on non-digital outlets. Working closely with Executive Producer, Impact Media and Director, Digital and Social Content, develop, pitch, execute, and distribute content aligned with overall strategy. Identify and react to opportunities to create impact and awareness through Partners content plans. Provide creative and management leadership in support of the Society’s goals and objectives.

This position reports to the Vice President, Content and Editorial and directly manages the Sr. Manager, Content Strategy.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

  • Content Leadership & Strategy (30%) - Executes the Society-wide process for developing the annual content and editorial plan, which effectively utilizes digital and traditional channels. Executes comprehensive approach for optimizing amplification and distribution across all NGS, Disney/NGP, and other applicable channels, focusing on strategic priorities. Develops inventive and creative content and advances editorial ideas that increase our impact and drive visibility opportunities. Leads the team responsible for collecting, curating, and sharing stories, talent, and media assets generated by NGS Explorers, mission programs, and partners. Serves as internal resource and expert around content and editorial.
  • Partner Relations & Amplification (50%) - Responsible for developing and expanding existing relationships with NGP/Disney editorial teams to ensure mutual benefit. Oversees NGS/NGP integration across all levels to ensure smooth execution of content development and execution. Develops and ideates on story ideas and opportunities which contribute to the Society’s overall goals. Builds and leverages a deep understanding of NGP/Disney objectives and competitive environments to develop clear storytelling strategies for their platforms. Lead the team managing day-to-day NGP editorial relationship - pitching new ideas, integrating talent and content into existing projects, leveraging content to amplify Society goals, and collaborating on editorial projects.
  • Team Leadership & Management (20%) - Collaborates with Executive Producer, Impact Media, and Director, Digital and Social Content to execute overall content strategy. As needed, represents the Content & Editorial team with internal and external executives and stakeholders. Coach and develop team members.

What You’ll Bring


Bachelor's Degree preferred

Minimum Years of Experience  

10+ years of experience, plus 3+ years of management experience

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Solid creative reputation and demonstrated editorial experience with a variety of platforms. 
  • Knowledge of modern media business, including editorial trends and opportunities.
  • Keen understanding of the process and power of storytelling - both text and visual.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills and ability to work with individuals and groups at all levels.
  • Ability to manage a high-functioning team and work on multiple projects, under deadlines, with changing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced, environment.
  • Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Job Designation

Hybrid - This position has been designated Hybrid, meaning your position will be performed from NGS Base Camp three fixed days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and can be performed remotely for two fixed days a week (Monday and Friday).We encourage you to apply even if your experience is not a 100% match with the position.
