NILC is seeking a Head of Digital Communications to oversee NILC’s digital communications operation including managing our portfolio of websites, digital staff, and digital assets and campaigns. This mid-level management position will also serve as a liaison to NILC program and operations staff to ensure integrated digital communications are helping to drive our strategic framework and organizational priorities. This person will serve on the Communications Department’s management team and will report to the Director of Communications.


Leadership Direction

  • Communicate the actions needed to implement the function's strategy and business plan within the team; explain the relationship to the broader organization's mission, vision, and values; motivate people to commit to these and to doing extraordinary things to achieve local business goals. Mentor junior staff.

Digital Marketing Strategy and Roadmap

  • Develop critical components of the digital marketing road map.

External Communications

  • Manage certain aspects of the external communications system with some guidance from senior colleagues. This could mean being responsible for the development or operation of the system.

Digital Marketing Plan Execution

  • Lead execution for the digital marketing plan, overseeing inbound and outbound digital channels and all aspects of digital marketing campaigns.

Customer Relationship Management

  • Develop and implement relationship management plans for complex existing customer accounts to identify and build relationships with relevant decision makers and influencers within the customer organization and to enable effective two-way flow of information and resolution of issues. Manage ongoing relationships with identified customer segments to ensure their needs are met, providing themes, summary analyses, and recommendations for changes based on customer input.

Client & Customer Management (External)

  • Past experience managing consultants and specifically the ability to align consultants with strategic direction and oversight.

Performance Management

  • Manage and report on the performance of a substantial, diverse team; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project /account team members and hold them accountable for achieving these; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team /personal objectives.

Improvement /Innovation

  • Capability of and demonstrated experience with developing innovative digital strategies as part of integrated communications plans.

Continuous Improvement

  • Review existing operations in a major area of work and implement innovation processes to generate new ideas and ensure the required continuous improvement outcomes are delivered.

Builds Interpersonal Trust

  • Build trust with the members of a small-sized team by valuing and acting on the perspectives of those who are different from them while also being honest and authentic about their own values, how they like to get work done, and who they are.

Digital Strategy/Transformational Projects Execution

  • Lead execution of digital road map, establishing and managing business processes, programs, and projects, resource allocation, KPIs, and governance activities.

Impact Assessment

  • Collect and synthesize metrics and other data and participate in reviews of marketing activities to identify possible improvements.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Marketing, or related field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Political and/or advocacy campaign experience. 
  • Experience working for an elected official and/or in a political environment is preferred 
  • 7-9 years of experience, with proven track record in strategic communication planning, execution, and measurement.
  • Expert skills in communications, media relations, writing, messaging and brand management.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, complex environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with very strong organizational and project management ability.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing high-impact work.
  • Experience managing high-pressure situations and working in ambiguity to define a clear path.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and conflict resolution skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups.
  • Experience working in coalitions and/or ensuring alignment and clear communication across a diverse set of partners.


  • We are currently working remotely and travel is restricted due to COVID-19. The work environment is generally quiet, and in an office setting. Under normal conditions, up to 10% of overnight interstate travel may be required, generally to NILC’s Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles offices, or another location within the U.S for 3-5 nights at a time.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Repeating motions, like typing or answering a phone, that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

Salary for the role is commensurate with experience and will be between $118,000-$135,000.
