The Controller is responsible for the management and direction of the Accounting Division of the Finance Department and for ensuring the integrity of the general ledger and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. This position works with all departments in the museum to develop recurring and special reports using a variety of software, and is responsible for the preparation of all general ledger information of the museum. The Controller serves as an advisor on issues concerning the financial management of the museum and develops and administers accounting policy and procedures.

Position Requirements

·        Accounting and Financial Expertise:

o   Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of accounting principles;

o   Ability to effectively analyze, troubleshoot, and mitigate accounting variances and ensure compliance with financial reporting and other compliance procedures, in accordance with OMSI standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);

o   Excellent time management skills, with an emphasis on accounting processes and schedules;

o   Advanced knowledge of Financial Edge, SageIntacct, and/or other financial software;

o   Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel and Google Sheets;

·        Business Practices:

o   Developed organizational, project, leadership, and people management skills that encourage collaboration, team-building, and accountability to meet individual, departmental, and organizational deadlines and deliver measurable results;

o   Effective time management skills, with an emphasis on managing and tracking multiple projects, with a high degree of accuracy—often with overlapping and time-sensitive deadlines;

o   Demonstrated and excellent interpersonal, written, presentation, and verbal communication and customer service skills to work effectively with people of diverse talents and backgrounds;

o   Exercises sound judgement while upholding high integrity and ethical standards;

o   Ability to model and support a positive team dynamic with paid and unpaid staff.

·        Bachelor’s degree in an industry related to accounting;

·        8 years of cumulative accounting experience with increasing responsibility:

o   Demonstrated experience leading and managing advanced accounting functions and operations, such as compliance and controls, cash management, audit supervision, and financial reporting;

o   Experience successfully leading and managing a team of accounting professionals;

o   Excellent planning and organization experience, with an emphasis on managing finance systems and policies;

o   Demonstrated experience effectively communicating finance-related policies and procedures with a diverse range of departments and stakeholders.

·        Demonstrated experience or ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in professional work environments.
