The Role


The Volunteer Manager is an exempt (salaried) position reporting to the HR Senior Director. The Manager’s responsibilities include the overall design, oversight and management of the volunteer program. This is the ideal position for someone who enjoys the challenge of strategic planning but is operationally minded and thrives in a hands-on environment. This is primarily an onsite public facing role.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Continuously evaluate, design and update volunteer opportunities on The Interactive floor and the business office. Ensure that the program matches volunteering needs with local volunteer availability.
  • Work closely with development to create and implement a menu of volunteer opportunities for corporate partners. Be the contact for corporate volunteering events.
  • Ensure volunteer needs are met for signature programs and other special needs.
  • Partnering with the Staff and Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator, develop and implement an overall volunteer recruitment plan and continuously evaluate success and make adjustments as needed. Engage with sources, programs and community partners in order to highlight volunteer opportunities. Attend virtual and in person recruitment events.
  • Provide departments with training and support in scheduling and managing the day-to-day volunteer activities. Work with departments to provide information for the daily volunteer briefings.
  • Plan, coordinate and participate in the Volunteer Advisory Board (VAB) on a quarterly basis and act as the staff representative for feedback follow up. In conjunction with the VAB Chairperson oversee the progress of VAB Committees including training, mentoring, annual scholarships, community outreach, safety, volunteer events, field trips and specialized recruitment.
  • Manage the ongoing communication process with volunteers through emails, electronic newsletters, briefing meetings and events. 
  • Through tracking mechanisms and other ongoing development, source specific volunteer expertise for specific needs and proper utilization of volunteers.
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed to place an annual Volunteer Representative on The Tech’s Board of Directors. 
  • Act as the objective management outlet for volunteer questions, suggestions and issues; follow up with the appropriate department for resolution.
  • Partner with the Training and Engagement Manager to plan the annual Volunteer Recognition Event and Recognition Week activities through the involvement of all departments.
  • Provide service information to the Training and Engagement Manager to ensure ongoing recognition and retention plans including hourly recognition badges and mentorship pins.
  • Work with the Safety and Security Manager to ensure all volunteers are trained in security procedures, emergencies and other safety-related programs.
  • Head the scholarship application and selection process. Work closely with the selection committee and handle logistics for distribution.
  • Participate in weekly operations meetings and other committees as appropriate. 
  • Participate in The Interactive’s Manager of the Day (MOD) and floor infusion programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 




  • 5+ years experience in a management role with a volunteer program that had daily or frequent volunteers in a public-facing role.
  • Analytical with the ability to create strategic plans that set annual goals and tactics for achievement and to adjust these plans as needed.
  • Proven skill at creating, maintaining and balancing a budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (both oral and written) skills.
  • Good mentoring skills with the ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Prior experience sourcing and working with outside partners.
  • Ability to make daily switches between strategic and hands-on work. Thrives in a public facing work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office, word processing and database experience.
  • Availability and willingness to work some weekend days per month and also work some occasional evenings and holidays as the needs of the position dictate.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Bilingual a plus.
  • Familiarity with Volgistics HRIS system or similar employee-tracking database system a plus.
  • Prior volunteer experience preferred.
  • Ability to adhere to The Tech’s grooming guidelines.
