Job Description Summary

National Geographic Society (NGS) is embarking on an exciting period of growth and innovation which includes expanding its in-house engagement and marketing team and building an advancement communications group to support the organization’s fundraising, programmatic and mission-oriented goals. With a focus on brand and digital engagement, NGS is building an entrepreneurial team of in-house expertise comprised of strategic communications, marketing, digital and multi-media professionals housed within the communications division of NGS.

The Communications Division leads the development and execution of integrated communications and marketing strategies to further the mission of the National Geographic Society and advance its position as one of the world's most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. Driven by the Society's vision to be more globally known for its impactful Explorer-led mission programs, the Division's creative and strategic minds develop strategic communications, marketing campaigns, creative, content, and media to promote the Society's strategic plan and key priorities. The Division comprises six departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand, Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial. 

The Engagement and Marketing Strategy department is an exciting new team within the Communications division at NGS. The department designs and implements a marketing strategy for the Society to deepen engagement with core audiences and plays a key role in supporting a culture of philanthropy at NGS. The team is driven by a deep understanding of audience behaviors and motivations — designing digital experiences, outreach campaigns and acquisition strategies to meet their needs.

The Senior Director, Experiential Marketing is an integral member and leader within the Engagement and Marketing Strategy team, responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive marketing plans for our Base Camp, events, and partnership programs that build momentum, excitement, and commitment with our high-touch audiences. The Senior Director, Experiential Marketing serves as a key leader within the Communications division, will have an entrepreneurial spirit, and is a highly collaborative, business-savvy professional who has solid experience in developing and executing marketing programs and delivering impact. This role reports to the VP, Engagement and Marketing Strategy.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop marketing plans and strategies that engage, grow, and retain our target and reach audiences through our Base Camp, events, and partnership programs. (20%)
  • Lead tours, demos, and presentations for donors, prospects, and other key stakeholders that align with brand strategy and campaign objectives. (20%)
  • Work closely with colleagues across the Communications division to develop marketing materials, launch campaigns and drive continued engagement with key audiences. (20%)
  • Increase the impact of our tentpole events and enterprise-wide moments including marketing sponsorship and public engagement opportunities. (10%)
  • Engage with audiences and prospects across several touchpoints such as events, trade shows, conferences, roadshows, webinars, and in-person meetings to support lead generation, gain mindshare of prospects, instill brand values, and increase brand loyalty. (10%)
  • Monitor industry trends, competitive landscape, social media, and device landscape to inform all existing materials and/or inspire the development of new marketing materials and experiences. (10%)
  • Serve as strategic advisor and thought partner to Chief Communications Officer and VP, Engagement and Marketing Strategy on experiential marketing opportunities. (10%)

What You’ll Bring


Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred. Credentials in marketing, communications, or fundraising a plus.


  • 12+ years of experience in communications, marketing, branding, public relations or a related field, including prior experience supporting fundraising and/or advancement
  • 5+ years of management experience

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • A keen understanding of how and when to prioritize different marketing tactics to yield successful audience engagement and achieve key metrics.
  • Experience in field marketing and/or events marketing
  • Ability to work collaboratively and with executive level stakeholders to translate organizational needs and goals into marketing activities that yield excitement, awareness and engagement.
  • Data-driven thinker with the ability to develop and utilize surveys, analytics, behavioral research and other tactics to gain deeper insights into audience preferences and motivations to optimize strategies.
  • Strong project and budget management skills 
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills. 
  • Strong, results-driven, leader and communicator, who can work well in a matrix environment. 
  • Humility, creativity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to work cohesively and collaboratively across teams

Job Designation

  • Hybrid - This position has been designated Hybrid, meaning your position will be performed from NGS Base Camp three fixed days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and can be performed remotely for two fixed days a week (Monday and Friday).
