WHO WE ARE AT LILACS ON YORK | Lilacs on York Creative Studios exists to support equity-centered individuals and organizations in telling compelling stories, finding and engaging human connections and generally being their best. Lilacs on York was formed in 2010 as a project focusing solely on graphic design. In the ten years since then, the full-time work of our Founder and Principal Creative Strategist, Alison K. Mason has grown the scope and capacity of this boutique design and communication firm. We cater our work to equity-centered individuals and organizations because it gives us the opportunity to draw the right people into the critical work that the world needs: beauty, access, and justice. We work with clients to craft beautiful, distinctly personal solutions… solutions that move them forward.

We do this via three main avenues:

  1. Graphic design & communication strategy (branding & design, visual & written storytelling and communication strategy)
  2. Creative Retreats for Entrepreneurs
  3. Digital learning products

We are a small design team that also provides communication strategy (we make the words look AND sound good!) and that’s why we need you! Communication and Content Strategists on our design team provide essential support to the print, web, and storytelling arm of Lilacs on York. Often, we will be given a large chunk of information that needs to be condensed and/or finessed before we can work on the design aspect.

We need you to bring your way with words, your ability to find and tell a good story, your ownership, flexibility and willingness to learn, to this type of work with clients. We want someone who is passionate about great storytelling and who is also willing to apply critical thinking to every step of a project. We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit who wants to get in on the ground floor of a growing business.

The ideal candidate would be open to working with Lilacs on York for 1+ years. This is a part-time contract role that will report directly to the Founder/Principal.


  • Study and understand project proposals
  • Conceptualize information to craft a compelling story, based on requirements from the client, no matter the depth of information given to you (asking the right questions to get what you need if you don’t have enough!)
  • Provide strategic communications counsel and create communications content for internal teams, projects, and initiatives
  • Prepare rough drafts and present ideas
  • Amend responses after feedback either from the client or Founder/Principal, and ensure that final responses are captivating and on-brand

  • Consider problems to be opportunities to be creative but also think ahead to avoid as many problems as you can

Meet these technical requirements:

  • Have access to a computer and reliable high speed internet
  • Expert copy editor and writer


Google Docs


  • Knowledge of English writing techniques, tools, and principles
  • Creativity and originality
  • Fluency of ideas
  • Writing/Advanced copy editing
  • Confident in the ability to critique and edit in service of storytelling


The pay rate for this position is $40-50 per hour, depending on experience. The ideal candidate for this position will be hired as a contractor.
