HarperCollins Children’s Books, one of the leading publishers of children’s books, is currently seeking an Assistant Editor to provide support to two Executive Editors publishing for the Harper, HarperTeen, and Amistad imprints, working on picture books, middle grade titles, teen, and select graphic novels, both fiction and nonfiction. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, is excited about children’s books, and is conscientious, organized, and reliable. This is a role for a self-starter who can work autonomously as well as with a team.


  • Provides editorial support to two Executive Editors.
  • Tracks, reads, and evaluates submissions (picture books, middle grade, graphic novels, and teen).
  • Reads behind the manager and provides editorial feedback on acquired projects.
  • Reviews illustrators and illustration style for current and future projects and maintains database of illustrators and agents.
  • Learns and becomes versed in book formats and book production as it applies to managers’ lists.
  • Monitors the book production schedule for managers’ titles – prepares and traffics transmittals, coordinates legal reviews (if necessary), expert reads, and sensitivity reads as needed, corresponds with freelance contributors as needed, and secures permissions for text and art as needed.
  • Writes flap copy, selling copy, and title sheets; reviews marketing material.
  • Reviews routing materials and layouts at all stages of book development, relays questions to managers and delivers feedback.
  • Handles information flow and communication with authors, agents, estates, and inter-departmental team members.
  • Conducts sales research, runs P&Ls (profit & loss excel doc), finds competitive titles.
  • Drafts, tracks and routes contract requests and memos.
  • Provides feedback on ideas for original book projects developed in-house, contributes to regular brainstorming conversations and meetings, and assists in book proposal development.
  • Makes appointments; maintains and updates files and records.
  • Takes and shares notes for key meetings.
  • Handles miscellaneous administrative duties including, but not limited to, monthly expense reports and booking travel if needed.


  • 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 1 year of publishing experience
  • Interest in children’s books and popular culture, 0 to 18 years
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills, and proven ability to set priorities and multitask under pressure
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Excel
  • Must have interest in and general understanding of children’s book marketplace, industry and readings
  • Must communicate ideas/opinions clearly and effectively, both in person and in writing
