Who We Are

United States of Care (USofCare) is a non-partisan non-profit organization on a mission to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care regardless of health status, social need, or income. We champion fair and commonsense policy changes to meet people’s urgent needs: the certainty that their health care will be affordable, that their coverage will be dependable and there when they need it, that their health care is personalized, and that the system is easy to understand and navigate.

In order to achieve our people-centered mission, USofCare has developed highly intentional organizational values and we are committed to building a diverse team at all levels of our organization, cultivating an inclusive culture, and engaging with people who bring different perspectives and lived experiences to our efforts. Our values are how we work internally and externally, what we hold up and celebrate, and what we are constantly striving for and aspiring to be as an organization. View our values at

In building our team, at every level we value and prioritize inclusion and diverse perspectives. Position Overview and Responsibilities

USofCare is seeking a Communications Director to join our team of passionate, adaptable, accountable, innovative problem-solvers dedicated to making our health care system better for all people.

The Director of Communications serves a critical role in advancing USofCare’s public brand and visibility. Through strategic planning, department, project management, staff management, narrative development, earned media, and executive communications, the Director helps to advance USofCare’s policy and advocacy efforts as we work to become the national leader in people-centered health care policy.

The Director serves as an important member of the Communications team, working closely with the Chief Communications Officer to build and refine the organizational narrative, brand, and comprehensive press strategy. The Director leads on all major written communications, collaborating across departments and with experts on content goals, substance, and strategic rollout plans, as well as preparing spokespeople to engage with the media and give external speeches with messaging that aligns with our strategic narrative and programmatic work.

The Director will effectively manage a growing Communications staff and assist in hiring and management of vendors, freelancers, and capacity-increasing personnel.

The Director is an important role in the organization, and possesses a background in political or advocacy communications and supports USofCare’s people-first organizational priority. They will work closely with research and policy team members, consultants, and vendors to ensure that USofCare messaging is appropriately and informatively tested and that research lessons are incorporated most effectively to support our goals.

  • To be successful in this role, you must have a strong commitment to ensuring everyone has access to quality, affordable health care, and have a dedication to operating in a diverse, bipartisan, learning atmosphere that explores multiple policy solutions to achieve our mission. You are willing to respect different points of view, and are committed to applying an equity lens and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in all your work;
  • 8-10 years of professional experience, at increasing levels of responsibility and leadership preferably in health care, public health, or other national issues. You have experience in and enjoy leading diverse communications staff, can build trust, and can leverage the strengths of your team members;
  • Excellent and persuasive writing and communication skills, and the ability to engage with grasstops and/or grassroots storytellers to amplify a message;
  • Effective project management skills, with the ability to balance innovation and creativity with the ability to organize in order to get the work done. You are able to juggle projects, priorities, deadlines, and resources to drive strategic brand, campaigns, products, and narratives;
  • Willingness to be adaptable, entrepreneurial, collaborative, and to accept and meet challenges head on.
